What Never to Do with a Green VISCO Fuse

New Year’s Eve celebrations are coming, and with them the moment when many of us buy fireworks to welcome the new year. Before you plan your show, let’s recall some basic safety rules – specifically, what never to do with the fuses found on most fireworks.

Green VISCO fuse is one of the most common fuses in fireworks. You’ll find it on almost everything – from firecrackers and fountains to cakes. It is valued for its reliability, easy handling, and relatively accurate burn rate. Produced in different diameters (usually 2–5 mm), it burns at about 1 cm per second, giving users time to light the effect and retreat to a safe distance.

Why is the Green VISCO fuse so popular?

Big NO: Never wrap the fuse with tape!

You may have seen videos on social media or YouTube where people wrap the fuse with electrical tape or fix it tightly to the product. Often they do this thinking they are making a waterproof fuse that will work in rain or snow. Please never try this – it’s extremely dangerous!

Wrapping or sealing creates a confinement tube where hot gases and flames cannot escape. This dramatically increases the burn rate. A slow fuse can suddenly turn into a flash fuse, igniting the firework almost instantly.

Beware of a “dirty” fuse — never use it

Another risk is when the fuse becomes contaminated with pyrotechnic composition from the product — for example, powder spilling from a firecracker. If the fuse is dirty with such material, it must not be lit. In such a case, the fuse may burn much faster and behave completely unpredictably.

Key rules:

• The fuse must be clean — green with no deposits.

• Do not try to scrape off or wash off spilled composition.

• Never light a damaged or dirty fuse — rather do not use the product and contact the seller or an expert.

• If you see loose composition or a damaged casing, do not throw it in the trash — contact the seller or local authorized disposal service.

What does this mean in practice?

• Instead of several seconds of delay, ignition may occur immediately.

• No time to move to a safe distance.

• The risk of burns or injury is much higher.

• The firework itself may be damaged.

How to handle the fuse safely

• Never modify, wrap, or glue it.

• Use it exactly as installed by the manufacturer.

• If you need a longer delay, use an original extension fuse with a known burn rate, not “DIY fixes.”

• Always check the fuse before use — it must be clean and undamaged.

• If in doubt, do not use the product and consult the seller.

Before the celebrations, remember

Green VISCO fuse is reliable and safe — but only if used as designed. Wrapping it with tape in hopes of waterproofing or lighting a “dirty” fuse is a dangerous gamble that can turn it into an uncontrolled hazard.
